Thuraday, September 19, 1991 PETAL Journal 5 Relig rrrr- X'ltWm Weddings aosi Real heroes shine with little fanfare ft I 4 Billie Buckley plj ft I js. s. so a. "Do you have a hero?" "Use to. Not anymore." "Why?" "He got captured." If you live long enough you can mark this down for sure: Your hero will be captured! Now you may be of the stripe that spits out these words, "No, I don't have a hero.

Never have. Never will. Everybody I know is rotten down to the core." Sometimes I think the problem is that we don't know what a hero should look like. Many have false pictures in mind. Like, a hero is someone who strolls around dressed in white, arms folded, never ruffled, never upset.

False. Or, a hero is someone who storms through life, flinging his weight around until he has toppled down or rearranged everything in his way. False. Yesterday, I asked my fourth period English class who their childhood heroes were. Their answers fell in three categories.

Super Heroes: Batman, the Incredible Hulk, Superwoman Harmless Heroes: Big Bird, Grover, the Cookie Monster Star Heroes: Ryne Sandburg, Mary Lou Retton This one I loved. "My hero was my dad and still is." Dad, could your child say that about you? As I look back over my list of people who became my heroes it was made up of those who were unconscious of it. They were never puffed up with pride and importance. They were established. There is a scripture that reminds us, "Be not carried away with many strange doctrines.

For it is a good thing that the heart be established with grace." They had established hearts. Also, they were my heroes because I could always have confidence in them, knowing that they went around saying nice, undeserved things about me behind my back. This stability came from what Oswald Chambers calls "a history with Jesus Christ." Theirs was a long and a deep history spent in his presence. It's about time for another definition of a hero. A hero is someone who is many times patched up and scratched up.

The storms of life have hammered at him regularly. Yet he never has slithered off into the sunset because of the storm. It did not make him cross and restless, neither did he revert to a flip-flop faith based on his present feelings and circumstances. My heroes always go about their days living as God's child among their family, their job and their friends. They even do this in church.

Are you somebody's hero? Remember, you don't have to be a super star to be a hero. Just find someone with a need; meet it. But don't tell a soul. You are now on your way to becoming a real hero. Have fun.
