our a a Thursday, June 20, 1991 PETAL Journal Weddings engagements Petal's McNeil tunes up with prize in country song By JAMES DANIELS Special to the JOURNAL Paul P. McNeil of Petal has something to sing about these days. The Petal resident has been named both the winner and a runner-up in the second American Songwriter Song Lyrics Contest for 1991. The contest is held once every two months and is sponsored by American Songwriter magazine. McNeil's two winning songs "A High Mountain Night" and "Pink Butterfly" are featured in the magazine's current May-June issue.

"The publisher (of American Songwriter) called me and told me that 'A High Mountain Night' had won the contest before I even received a copy of the magazine," said McNeil. "And then someone called me from Miami (Florida) asking for my permission to set 'Pink Butterfly' to music. That's when I found out that I also had a song selected as a runner-up." The purpose of the contest is to promote the art of songwriting and give amateur lyric writers an opportunity to become actively involved in the songwriting industry, according to information printed in the contest's literature. A panel of judges from the music industry selected the winner and runners-up. McNeil's winning lyrics were inspired by the television series "High Mountain Ranger," he said.

The lyrics for "Pink Butterfly" a personal favorite of McNeil was inspired by his 10-year-old daughter, Reagan. "I was working on another song one night when (Reagan) came into the room and handed me a piece of paper with a red heart and a pink SAVE $7.00 Now Only SAVE plus 1.95 coupon sitting tee CLIP go 08 (Reg. $14.95) d110 (2) 8x10's. Look here what I've made. Most of his songs are inspired by everyday life, McNeil said. But the songs he really enjoys writing are those which leave the listener "feeling good inside," he said. "Country music is about everyday life," said McNeil. "Some of it is silly and some of it's stupid.

I write sad songs, Christmas songs and some country gospel songs. But I prefer the songs that leave you with a good feeling, like 'Pink McNeil said a songwriter can get ideas for lyrics from just about anything. Putting such abstract thoughts into words is the hard part, he said. "You can get an idea for a song from anything and said McNeil. "I always carry a pen and paper with me.

Whenever I get an idea, I write it down immediately. "Some people just write songs, and some people just set lyrics to music," he said. "I start singing my songs as I write them. I also have all of my songs on tape. I have to do that so everyone will know the tune for McNeil said that he is currently working on a humorous country song.

He also said that he will continue to submit his works to the contest in the future. "(Winning the contest) is not that big of a deal to me," said McNeil. "I'm really kind of embarrassed by it. But I will continue to enter the contests. But that's as far as I plan to go with it.

The magazine doesn't do anything else with the songs after that." As the winner of the second lyric writing contest of the year, McNeil won a Casiotone MT-520 electronic keyboard. His winning song will now advance to the overall winner's competition along with the other five issues' winners.
