C004 Ace in the Hole Today is "According to Hoyle Day" a day to reread Edmund Hoyle's "Short Treatise" on the card game of Whist. Printed in 1742, the authoritative treatise made "according to Hoyle" synonymous with correct card play. Makers of playing cards in Hoyle's time printed only 51 cards per deck.

The British government printed all aces of spades and doled them out only after card makers had paid taxes on the decks. Hence the often incongruous design of that particular ace. Suzette Charles Miss America sued by former manager TRENTON, N.J. (AP) Suzette Charles, who became Miss America when Vanessa Williams resigned following the publication of nude photos of her, has been sued for breach of contract by her manager.

The three-count civil suit seeking monetary damages for Michael Pedicin Jr. says he was wrongfully fired by Miss Charles, his lawyer, Harvey Sernovitz, said Tuesday. No date has been set for a hearing on the suit, filed Monday in Superior Court here. The suit also names Miss Charles' parents, Charles and Suzette DeGaetano. DeGaetano said he was unaware of the lawsuit and had no comment.

He said his daughter was unavailable for comment. Miss Charles, 21, became Miss America on July 23 and fired Pedicin on Aug. 10. She had signed a three-year contract with Pedicin on Oct. 24, Sernovitz said.

Miss Charles will crown her successor on Sept. 15.. Lottery winner is very camera shy DAYTON, Ohio (AP) Carol Howard may not mind being rich, but she makes it clear she has no desire to be famous. Ms. Howard, the Greenville sales clerk who was one of eight grandprize winners in the Ohio Lotto's record $24.7 million jackpot last month, showed up at the lottery's Dayton office Tuesday to pick up her first $123,421.36 check.

But when she stepped into the doorway of the conference room and came face-to-face with a roomful of reporters, photographers and three television cameras, she backed out fast. "Oh, no," she said. Lottery Director Thomas Chema, who had invited the media to the check presentation after Ms. Howard signed a publicity release, could not persuade her to step before the cameras to receive the check, the first of 20 annual installments. "Mrs.

Howard has declined to be photographed, and there's nothing we can do about it," Chema said. Many winners fear the publicity will subject them to harassment from people with suggestions about how the money should be spent, said lottery spokeswoman Anne Bloomberg. Ms. Howard said earlier she would split her winnings with Robert Matthews a friend who picked the six correct numbers and invested 50 cents in the winning ticket. The check was made out to both Ms.

Howard and Matthews. or more specifically in this trailer Videotape saves elaborate plans GARDEN CITY, Kan. (AP) A weekend traffic accident and a broken leg didn't stop the wedding plans of Jody Decker and her fiance, Ted Willimon, thanks to the magic of videotape. Willimon, 23, was injured in a traffic accident Sunday, threatening plans for an elaborate outdoor wedding Tuesday night at the Decker ranch about 40 miles southwest of Garden City. But Willimon and Miss Decker, 21, exchanged vows Tuesday in the Liberal hospital where he is confined with a broken leg.

The ceremony was videotaped so the outdoor wedding could be held as planned, with Willimon's brother standing in for him live and videotape being played for the guests. Millionaire status has its drawbacks CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) Gov. Jay Rockefeller is a millionaire just as his name implies, but he and his wife also paid 55 percent of his income in taxes over the last 10 years. The Rockefellers on Tuesday released joint tax returns showing that they received total income of $20.9 million between 1974 and 1983 and paid $11.4 million in state and federal taxes.

At a news conference Tuesday, Rockefeller, 47, distributed copies of federal and state tax returns for past decade and challenged his opponent in the U.S. Senate race, Republican John Raese, to also open up' his books. Raese spokesman Les Milam said later that the GOP candidate would make a similar disclosure "in the next few days." Princess Caroline Caroline's son to be baptized MONACO, Monte Carlo (AP) The infant son of Princess Caroline of Monaco is to be baptized Saturday in a private ceremony at the Monaco palace, the family spokeswoman said. Andrea Albert Casiraghi was born June 8. Princess Caroline, 27, the daughter of Prince Rainier III and the late Princess Grace, married Italian businessman Stefano Casiraghi in December.

She was divorced from Philippe Junot in 1980, and has been seeking a Vatican annulment of that marriage to allow her to marry Casiraghi in the Roman Catholic Church.
