On this date: In 1783, George Washington resigned as commander in chief of the Army and retired to his home at Mount Vernon, Va. In 1823, the poem "A Visit from St. Nicholas" by Clement C. Moore was published in the Troy (N.Y.) Sentinel. In 1928, the National Broadcasting Company set up a permanent, coastto-coast network.

In 1941, during World War 11, American forces on Wake Island surrendered to the Japanese. In 1948, former Japanese premier Hideki Tojo and six other Japanese war leaders were executed in Tokyo. In 1968, 82 crew members of the U.S. intelligence ship Pueblo were released by North Korea, 11 months after they had been captured. In 1975, Richard S.

Paid Announcement FLETCHER RHINEHART COMMUNITY LEADER DIES AFTER ILLNESS Fletcher Abraham Rhinehart of Waynesboro, a widely respected community leader and successful businessman, died Wednesday after a lengthy illness. He was 84. Mr. Rhinehart, a native of Greene County, served in the Navy aboard a destroyer during World War Two.

He moved to Waynesboro in 1950 and later opened and operated Rhinehart Feed and Milling Company, a thriving business that for more than 30 years served all of Wayne County in addition to surrounding counties in Mississippi and Alabama. He sold the business and retired in 1983. A respected community leader, Mr. Rhinehart was elected a member of the Board of Directors of First State Bank in April of 1964, a position he held until his resignation on April 1, 2000. Upon his retirement, the Officers and Directors of the First State Bank immediately acknowledged his service, naming him Director Emeritus and praising him for his "leadership, wisdom and good common sense." "He was a pillar of our community, Cecil Bonner said, "a man of unquestioned integrity and great vision.

He had a very positive impact on Waynesboro and Wayne County." For his decades of service to Mississippi's agricultural interests, Mr. Rhinehart was named a member of the Mississippi Department of Agriculture and Forestry Museum's Hall of Fame in Jackson, where a plaque below his photograph reads "Fletcher Rhinehart, Agriculture Leader, Farmer, Businessman, Public Servant." In 1972, Mr. Rhinehart served as Wayne County Chairman of Senator Trent Lott's first campaign for Congress. The charred bodies of 16 members of a doomsday cult, the Order of the Solar Temple, were found outside Grenoble, France. The same cult lost 53 members in 1994 in ritual killings in Switzerland and Catherine Cornelson Services were set for 1 p.m. today at Saulters-Moore Funeral Home Chapel for Catherine Cornelson, 75, of New Hebron, who died Dec. 21, 2000, at her residence. Burial will be in the New Hebron Cemetery.

Mrs. Cornelson owned Cornelson Tax Service for 20 years and was Methodist. Survivors include, three daughters, Melanie Glossom of Seminary, Freddie Bass of Columbia, and Carrianna Worthy of Prentiss; a brother, I.M. Stout Jr. of Santa Fe, N.M.; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

"Mr. Rhinehart and his wife of 53 years, the former Wilodyne Muckelrath of Smith County, have been active members of First Methodist Church in Waynesboro, each serving in a variety of positions over the span of five decades. Each of the Rhinehart's four children are accomplished educators and each has earned an advanced college degree. Their daughter Rebecca Ann Rhinehard of Waynesboro, recently retired from the Biloxi School System, holds a Specialist's Degree in education and presently serves as a reading consultant.

Beth Herring of Waynesboro earned a Ph.D in Education in 1999 and currently serves as Third and Fourth Grade Principal of Waynesboro Elementary School and serves as an Adjunct Professor for William Carey College. Ginger Houston of Springfield, Virginia, holds a Master's Degree in Speech Pathology, and son Ken Rhinehart of Hattiesburg holds a Master's Degree in Geology and serves as a Professor of Environmental Science at the University of Southern Mississippi. In Addition to his wife and four children, Mr. Rhinehart is survived by two grandchildren, Kate Rhinehart Houston, age 17, and Jeffery Powell Houston, 13, each of Springfield, Virginia, and by sons-in-law Russell Herring of Waynesboro and Tom Houston of Springfield, Virginia. Viewing will be held at 5 p.m.

Friday and funeral services will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at Freemen Funeral Home in Waynesboro. Burial services will be conducted in Greene County at the Sweetwater Cemetery located in the Pine Level community at approximately 11:30 a.m. Canada. Mrs. Deham was born in Success, MS, September 29, 1918, and was a resident of Orange Grove, MS. She was retired from Harrison County School District. She was a member of Poplar Head United Methodist Church in Saucier, MS, and a member of Handsboro Chapter Order of the Eastern Star. She was a charter member of the Orange Grove Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary.
