Neighbors, who also heard Mrs. Lee's screams, went to her back door to rescue her, but were unable to get the door open. A friend of Mrs. Lee, Roosevelt Hawkins, received first degree burns and suffered smoke inhalation.

He was transported to Natchez Regional Medical Center. Fire Chief Gary Winborne said the cause of the fire is unknown. State program to serve less clients due to loss of funding From The Associated Press JACKSON State health officials, faced with shrinking fedof eral funds, say they have no choice but to drop three-fourths of the about 880 Mississippians with AIDS or HIV from a mediin cation purchase program. "This is not something we want to do.

This is something we have to do," said Craig Thompson, who heads the Division of with the state Department of Health. The lack of federal Ryan White CARE funds means 660 clients will receive notices in two weeks informing them that the state can no longer supply the expensive medications they need to stay alive. "We wanted to provide the best level of care to as many people as possible and be able to guarantee that level of care throughout the funding period," said Thompson, explaining the selection process that will keep about 190 people on the treatment plan. The Health Department will cut from the program those who are on Medicaid and entitled to five prescription drugs per month. They will also cut those who have insurance for prescriptions from the program, Thompson said.

Individuals with AIDS or who are HIV-infected and who survive the cut will continue to receive new drug treatments, known as combination therapy, that are keeping patients alive indefinitely but can cost from $12,000 to $16,000 per year at normal market prices. The Legislative Black Caucus has proposed legislation in past sessions to provide funding for AIDS drugs, Thompson said, but it never made it out of committee. CRAIG THOMPSON Division of Mississippi State Health Department this," said William E. Arnold, cochairman of the Washingtonbased AIDS Drugs Assistance Program Advocacy Coalition. "It just jumped off the radar." While some other states are facing similar problems, Arnold said, Mississippi should have known back in November that it would be facing a funding crisis.

"We tried to give them a heads up that was going to be problems here," Arnold said, referring to a letter he sent to Gov. Kirk Fordice and the governors of the other 49 states. Arnold's letter states that "allowing greater access to HIV. positive individuals for these innovative therapies will be far more cost effective than limiting access, which causes individuals to become seriously ill and unable to work. It would be better to provide them with the necessary medication to keep them healthy, productive, job-holding taxpayers and to avoid a sharp increase in the use of welfare, Medicaid and expensive acutecare hospitalization." Heath Hall, the governor's spokesman, said he and other staff members were not aware of the letter, but he acknowledged that staff met with Thompson to find out more about the situation.

"Governor Fordice is in the process of evaluating the magnitude of the situation," Hall said.
